WCsite

The brief

WCsite is the client management system for a single clinic, covering doctor logins, patient records, appointments and attendance. I did not start it. The client came to me for fixes on an existing codebase, and over time the work grew from bug fixing into building whole modules across the frontend and backend.

The scheduling module

The largest piece of work was scheduling. A clinic does not book appointments one at a time: a doctor sees a given patient every Monday, or every other week, or once a month, and that pattern holds until someone changes it. The system needed to express that directly.

I built recurring appointments around weekly, bi weekly and monthly patterns, so a schedule is defined once and then generates the appointments that follow from it. Attendance is tracked against that schedule automatically, which removes the manual step where a staff member would otherwise tick off who came in against what was expected. Alerts cover the things people need telling about: appointments coming up, sessions missed, schedules that have changed.

Reporting sits on top. Administrators export summaries to Excel covering patient progress, appointment history and attendance, which is the format the clinic already worked in.

The rest of the work

Around that module sat a long tail of smaller fixes and features: role based access across administrators, doctors and schedulers, dashboard work for each role, authentication, and the ordinary bug fixing that any live system in daily use generates.

My role

This has been an intermittent engagement rather than a continuous project, running somewhere between one and one and a half years. The client gets in touch when something needs solving, we work through it, and it may be three months before the next round. Recurring scheduling and automated attendance were mine end to end, frontend and backend.
